Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the safety of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He added that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be released in the coming days.
